Char Dham Yatra

The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimage circuits in India, encompassing four sacred sites located in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. These four destinations hold immense spiritual significance for Hindus.

  • Yamunotri: Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, it marks the source of the Yamuna River. The temple was originally built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal in the 19th century and is believed to be a place of purification for pilgrims.

  • Gangotri: Dedicated to Goddess Ganga, this temple is located near the origin of the sacred Ganges River. Legend says King Bhagirath performed penance here, bringing Ganga to Earth.

  • Kedarnath: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is believed to have been built by the Pandavas of the Mahabharata era. The present structure was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD.

  • Badrinath: Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is one of the holiest temples in India. Established by Adi Shankaracharya, Badrinath is considered a place for attaining moksha (liberation).

The Char Dham Yatra was revived and promoted by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, with the aim of unifying the Hindu faith and guiding devotees to spiritual salvation.
